Reviews

„(...) It is more about the borders in the heads and about how to make them nimble. (...) With on the spot physicality a puzzle of lives and dreams in the middle east is created in this nevertheless cool made production. „(...) The path Zirner chose is very honest. (...) great awareness for the use of stylistic means and in this case, six performers who expose themselves as the adventurous yet well-behaved guys they are. The development of the project

Three of the performers themselves traveled to Israel and three to Iran, to conduct interviews. Ana Zirner hat established contacts there to soldiers who were born in the 80ies, and therefore belong to the same generation as the performers do. Since it is not safe to publish military experience, the names of the interviewees are not mentioned in the play. In order to avoid difficulties on a later trip to the two countries, the performers also work under pseudonyms.

Before the performers set out on their travels, they were prepared intensively. They were made familiar with the peculiarities of each country, they were trained in interview techniques and a questionnaire was set. Each met a soldier whose story he learned about during these ten days. The interviews were all recorded on mobile phones.

Immediately on their return, a two-day workshop was held in cooperation with the choreographer and dancer David N. Russo, to gather experiences. Further workshops were held until the rehearsals began in November 2013. Meanwhile, 36 hours of interviews were transcribed.

brothers in arms

How do people – men – live in Israel and in Iran? Among sabre-rattling, the promise of disarmament and suspicion on both sides?

The theatre dance project ‚brothers in arms’, takes not only the definite political development into account but the life of young men, living in Iran and Israel and not least in Germany. How do young men, born in the 80’s, deal with the omnipresens of war? Who is part of the same generation as Ana Zirner and her performers in Iran and Israel did experience his or her childhood during wartime, is still exposed to everlasing threat and usually just did his or her military service.

What is masculinity? Which part does power and military take?

From very personal, honest and often moving conversations, which the performers have led with iranian and israeli sodiers in their respective countries they have created exemplary and individual reports which are translated to the stage within "brothers in arms" in a scenic and somatic way.
